Introduction
The clearest finding is that Slovenia’s UFO file is thin, fragmented and uneven. A few events are useful because they show how reports can be checked against air-traffic data, location claims or known natural phenomena. Others remain only anecdotal. The most responsible reading is therefore not “nothing happened” or “aliens visited Slovenia”, but: Slovenia has a modest record of unexplained aerial reports, with most public evidence too weak to support extraordinary conclusions.

The modern case most worth taking seriously
The strongest recent Slovenian incident is the July 2023 report involving a TUI Airways pilot crossing Slovenian airspace. According to local reporting, the pilot asked air traffic control whether a military aircraft was flying about 40 to 50 miles away in a particular direction. The controller reportedly said there were no reports of military traffic; the pilot then described a bright light that shone towards the aircraft, disappeared, flashed, appeared to move around the sky, and then shone steadily again. [24ur]24ur.comOpen source on 24ur.com.
This case stands above most Slovenian sightings for one reason: it is not just a vague social-media clip. It involves a professional pilot, a conversation with air traffic control, and a reported check against known military or aircraft traffic. N1 reported that Slovenia’s air traffic control confirmed the event had been recorded, that no other aircraft reported the phenomenon, and that its radars did not detect an aircraft in the reported direction and altitude. That does not prove an exotic object; it simply means the observation was not matched, in the public account, to an ordinary aircraft return on radar. The unresolved part is also the weakness. Public reporting does not provide the pilot’s full instrument data, exact sky position, weather context, astronomical checks, independent visual confirmation, or a complete technical report. A bright light seen from an aircraft can be caused by another aircraft at an unexpected angle, satellite flares, planets, lightning-related effects, reflections, drones at lower levels, or errors in perceived distance and motion. The 2023 case is therefore best classified as a credible contested report: worth recording, not solved in the available public record, but far from demonstrating non-human technology.
Krško shows why sensitive locations attract weak claims
Krško Nuclear Power Plant is the Slovenian site most likely to attract UFO speculation because nuclear facilities carry obvious symbolic weight. In 2013, Slovenian outlets reported on a video said to show an unidentified object over the plant. Slovenske novice described two elongated lights, one white and one red, and noted the important limitation: the video itself did not show that the lights were actually at the nuclear plant; that claim came from the person who posted it. Zadovoljna.si likewise reported that foreign UFO websites had picked up the story after a local resident’s video was uploaded. [Slovenske Novice]slovenskenovice.delo.siSlovenske Novice Tuji medij: nad nuklearko Krško letel NLP?-Slovenske noviceSlovenske Novice Tuji medij: nad nuklearko Krško letel NLP?-Slovenske novice
That is a useful example of an evidence gap. A video can look intriguing while still failing basic verification tests: location, distance, direction, time, camera settings, nearby aircraft, lens artefacts and witness chain. In the Krško case, the sensitivity of the location made the claim more interesting, but the public evidence did not establish that the lights were over the facility or that they were anomalous.
Krško also illustrates a second point: official records around sensitive infrastructure are often about ordinary safety events, not UFOs. The plant’s own 2008 archive describes an “unusual event” caused by primary leakage, with shutdown procedures, inspection, repair and no release into the environment. That official record is relevant because it shows what documented incident reporting looks like when a real plant event occurs: dates, times, technical sequence, cause, public-safety assessment and institutional accountability. The UFO-style Krško videos do not come with that level of corroboration. Older reports form a scattered local chronology
Slovenia’s older UFO chronology is mostly preserved through newspapers and later media retrospectives. Večer’s “50 years ago” archive recalled a Maribor report in which witnesses described a bright elongated body moving from the Drava area towards Kalvarija, with some residents reportedly using binoculars or observing it with the naked eye. The same retrospective placed the report in a wider Yugoslav wave of sightings, including reports by jet pilots. In October 2008, Slovenian media covered a small cluster of reported sightings around Šempas, Ajdovščina and Maribor. 24ur framed the follow-up in explicitly investigative terms: what did people actually see, and was it really a UFO? The article itself, however, provides only a brief public-facing summary rather than a technical case file. [24ur]24ur.comNLP nad Ajdovščino? | 24ur.comNLP nad Ajdovščino? | 24ur.com
Maribor continued to appear in later local UFO reporting. In 2021, Ptujinfo/Mariborinfo reported a reader’s claim that several family members had watched a triangular formation with red flashing lights and a bright blue-white light moving unusually above Maribor. The account is vivid and multi-witness within one household, but it remains a witness-and-video media story rather than a corroborated aviation investigation. Taken together, these cases show regional variation without proving a hotspot. Maribor and the north-east appear repeatedly in public media; Ajdovščina and Šempas point to western Slovenia; Koper appears in international civilian reports; Ljubljana and Mislinja appear in recent NUFORC entries. The pattern may reflect population, media coverage, flight paths and active skywatchers as much as any physical concentration of anomalous events. What counts as evidence in Slovenia’s UFO record
Slovenian UFO material separates into three broad quality bands.
Confirmed but not UFO in the extraordinary sense: the 2020 Novo Mesto meteorite fall is the best example of an initially spectacular aerial event that became scientifically tractable. Hundreds of people across Slovenia and neighbouring countries saw a bright daytime fireball; dashcams, security cameras and even a cyclist’s helmet camera helped scientists recover meteorites and reconstruct the object’s path from space to southern Slovenia. [europlanet.org]europlanet.orgSource details in endnotes.
Credible but unresolved: the 2023 TUI Airways pilot report belongs here. It has a professional witness and air-traffic-control involvement, yet the public record does not contain enough sensor data to identify the cause. The proper label is “unidentified in available public reporting”, not “confirmed craft”. [N1]skupaj.sisi N1 Forbes Slovenija | Društvo Mali delničarji Slovenije Forbes Slovenija z rekordno branostjo. Thu, 12/02 … Sjedinjene Države objavlsi N1 Forbes Slovenija | Društvo Mali delničarji Slovenije Forbes Slovenija z rekordno branostjo. Thu, 12/02 … Sjedinjene Države objavl
Low-confidence or contested: many Slovenian UFO videos and social posts fall into this category. The Krško video reports, the 2021 Maribor triangular-light story and scattered civilian database entries may be sincere, but they lack the independent measurements needed to separate aircraft, drones, satellites, meteorological effects, camera artefacts and misperceived distance from genuinely anomalous behaviour. [Slovenske Novice]slovenskenovice.delo.siSlovenske Novice Tuji medij: nad nuklearko Krško letel NLP?-Slovenske noviceSlovenske Novice Tuji medij: nad nuklearko Krško letel NLP?-Slovenske novice [Ptujinfo.com]ptujinfo.comSource details in endnotes.
This evidence split is consistent with broader UAP research standards. NASA’s 2023 UAP study stressed that analysis is hampered by poor sensor calibration, missing metadata, lack of multiple measurements and sparse baseline data. Slovenia’s public cases show exactly that problem at country scale: interesting reports, but too little synchronised evidence. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govSource details in endnotes.
Drones, meteors and mountain weather are the main local confounders
Modern Slovenia has several built-in sources of mistaken UFO reports. The country is small, mountainous and crossed by regional and international air routes. It also has increasingly common drone activity. Slovenia Control explains that drone operators in the open category need registration, training and an online knowledge examination, while specific-category operations require additional authorisation from the Civil Aviation Agency of Slovenia; controlled airspace and airport-radius rules add further complexity. [sloveniacontrol.si]sloveniacontrol.siinformation for uav pilotsinformation for uav pilots
The Civil Aviation Agency’s restrictions also show why drone sightings can be messy for observers. Slovenia has geographical restrictions, populated-area limits and conditions for some low-altitude operations, including daytime limits and prior flight announcement in specific circumstances. In practice, a light seen near a town, road, event, airport zone or hillside may be difficult for an observer to classify without checking legal drone activity, aircraft traffic and local restrictions. [caa.si]caa.siGeographical restrictions for UASGeographical restrictions for UAS
Natural phenomena matter as well. The Novo Mesto meteorite fall proves that Slovenia can produce spectacular, widely witnessed sky events that initially feel extraordinary but later become explainable through camera triangulation and recovered material. Mountain weather can also produce striking cloud forms and optical effects, especially in Alpine and pre-Alpine terrain, though specific “UFO cloud” claims should still be checked case by case rather than treated as automatic explanations. [europlanet.org]europlanet.orgSource details in endnotes.
Archives and research groups remain incomplete
Slovenia does not appear to have a mature public UFO archive comparable to France’s official GEIPAN database. The accessible record is instead distributed among local media, international civilian databases and enthusiast projects. NUFORC lists Slovenia as a reporting country and shows recent entries from Mislinja and Ljubljana; its location index gives Slovenia a small total compared with larger European countries. NUFORC is useful as a discovery tool, but it is not an official Slovenian investigative authority and its entries vary greatly in detail. [nuforc.org]nuforc.orgOpen source on nuforc.org.
A notable recent development is Revija Misteriji’s 2026 project to collect Slovenian close-encounter testimonies and create what it describes as the first archive of its kind in the country. That may become useful for preserving witness accounts, but its value will depend on method: whether reports record exact time, location, direction, duration, weather, camera originals, witness independence, aircraft checks and follow-up explanations. Without those controls, an archive can preserve folklore and memory without resolving cases. [Misteriji]misteriji.siNLP-ji na Slovenskem | Misteriji.siNLP-ji na Slovenskem | Misteriji.si
The most valuable future Slovenian UFO record would link civilian reports to ordinary data sources: flight tracking, radar where available, drone permissions, astronomical checks, weather data, camera metadata and multiple independent witnesses. Until that exists, Slovenia’s UFO record should be read as a living catalogue of reports rather than a body of settled evidence.
Bottom line for Slovenia
Slovenia’s UFO phenomenon is real as a cultural and reporting pattern, but not strong as proof of extraordinary technology. The best cases involve trained observers or multiple witnesses; the weakest depend on unattributed clips, vague locations or sensational framing. The 2023 pilot report is the most serious recent public incident because it intersects with aviation control and radar checks. The Krško stories are memorable because of the nuclear setting, but their public evidence is much weaker. The 2020 Novo Mesto meteorite fall is the clearest lesson: impressive sky events can be real, dramatic and widely witnessed while still having a natural explanation once enough data are collected.
