Introduction
Official documentation of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) or “UFO” sightings in the Dominican Republic is remarkably sparse compared with the public archives of some other nations. Unlike countries with longstanding military or scientific programmes that collected and declassified UFO‑related records, Santo Domingo has no publicly accessible government archive or dedicated repository of aerial anomaly reports under national authority. This absence shapes both what researchers can analyse and how Dominican sightings are understood in broader UAP discussions.
Why There Is No Dedicated Dominican UFO Archive
The Archivo General de la Nación (AGN) is the Dominican Republic’s national archive, legally mandated to organise and preserve the country’s documentary heritage and public records. It manages historical documents, photographs, newspapers and other collections but does not maintain a recognised catalogue of UFO or UAP reports as a distinct archival category. Its publicly listed holdings and services focus on general historical documentation, and there is no indication on the AGN official site or institutional descriptions that anomalous aerial phenomena are archived or indexed there. [Archivo General de la Nación]WikipediaArchivo General de la Nación de República DominicanaArchivo General de la Nación de República Dominicana
Similarly, there is no publicly documented government programme—whether within defence, civil aviation, or scientific bodies—whose mandate, like the U.S. All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) or historical Project Blue Book, is to collect and manage aerial anomaly records. In contrast, other countries do host structured UAP record archives that are searchable or at least referenced in official inventories, but the Dominican Republic is absent from such global catalogues of government-maintained UFO files. Local scientific organisations, such as the Sociedad Dominicana de Astronomía, explicitly state that there are no objective, official reports or scientific investigations backed by government records supporting extraterrestrial interpretations of unidentified aerial sightings in the country. Such statements imply that official government documentation on these phenomena is either nonexistent or not systematically gathered. [Hoy Digital]hoy.com.doHoy Digital¿Hay OVNIs en RD? How Informal and External Databases Fill the Gap
With no central Dominican governmental archive on UFOs, most references to sightings in the country come from civilian reporting networks and international databases maintained by non‑governmental entities. Organisations such as the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) and other UAP aggregators include individual witness reports from across the world, often submitted by members of the public rather than official channels. Such databases can record accounts from observers in Santo Domingo or other regions of the Dominican Republic, but they are neither government‑validated nor systematically curated within Dominican institutional frameworks.
Similarly, broader open‑source or hobbyist UAP archives index documents and reports from government archives around the world (for example, American or European declassified files) but rely on public submissions and cross‑referencing of official sources from other states. Dominican cases, if present, appear in these datasets only when individuals submit them, and not because of structured release by Dominican authorities.
This informal ecosystem fills a documentation vacuum but comes with limitations: the data are often anecdotal, unevenly verified and lack the indexing or provenance controls that archivists apply within formal institutional collections.
What Better Documentation Would Require
To transition from informal community reports to a bona fide official UAP record archive, several structural steps would be necessary:
- Institutional reporting mechanisms: A formal system within a government agency (e.g. civil aviation authority, defence ministry) for logging, standardising, and storing UFO/UAP sighting reports would be required. This would include protocols for witness intake, verification metadata, and retention policies.
- Archive categorisation and indexing: The AGN or another public records office would need to adopt classification schemes for UAP‑related materials so that such records can be searched and retrieved. This implies not just storing sighting reports but cataloguing them with relevant descriptive metadata.
- Transparency and access policy: Public access to such records would depend on policies that balance national security, privacy and transparency goals. As in other countries with formal archives, this typically involves declassification review and public cataloguing.
- Interagency data sharing: If eyewitness reports intersect with aviation safety, radar tracking or national security concerns, interagency protocols would need to standardise how these entities contribute to a central archive.
Without these mechanisms, Dominican material on UAPs remains fragmented and informal, limiting researchers to external databases and civilian reports rather than authoritative government records.
What This Means for Dominican UAP Research
The absence of a Dominican UAP archive does not prove that unusual aerial events have not occurred; rather, it reflects how the phenomenon has been institutionally prioritised. In practice:
- Researchers cannot consult a Dominican government UFO archive, unlike in some countries where declassified military or civil aviation files are available for study.
- Dominican sightings, when they appear in records, are usually found in international civilian databases and not within indexed official government documentation.
- There is currently no structured Dominican government reporting programme for UAP sightings, meaning that domestic claims have to rely on independent reporting mechanisms rather than institutional archives.
As a result, any analysis of UAP phenomena in the Dominican Republic must acknowledge this archival gap and consider how it shapes the available evidentiary base. Archival efforts in other nations (such as U.S. federal archives of UFO/UAP records) show how organised documentation can support analysis, but similar structures do not presently exist within Dominican official institutions.
