Introduction
In Vanuatu, one of the first questions to ask about a reported UFO light is not “What was flying?” but “Which volcano was active?” Across the archipelago, volcanic systems regularly generate red glows, flashing bursts, illuminated steam clouds, ash plumes and horizon reflections that can appear startlingly artificial at night. In some locations, these effects are so common that they form the country’s strongest and most practical filter against misidentifying ordinary natural phenomena as unexplained aerial objects. [vmgd.gov.vu]vmgd.gov.vuVMGDThe volcanic alert Level for East Epi submarine has been at the Level 1 since 1st February 2023. The current observations are consist…
This matters because Vanuatu combines active volcanism with dark skies, long sea horizons and dispersed island communities. A witness may see a distant glow without being able to judge its range, altitude or source. Under those conditions, volcanic activity can easily create reports of hovering lights, pulsing objects or mysterious red illuminations that initially sound unusual but become far less mysterious when checked against geological conditions. Why volcanic light fools witnesses
Volcanoes do not merely produce lava. They create entire lighting environments.
An active vent can illuminate ash, steam and low cloud from below, producing diffuse glowing shapes that seem detached from the ground. When observers are many kilometres away, terrain can hide the volcano itself while leaving only the glow visible. The result may resemble a floating object above the horizon rather than an eruption source. [vmgd.gov.vu]vmgd.gov.vuakes that were visible at night. However…Read more…
Several additional effects increase the risk of misidentification:
- Pulsing brightness: Strombolian eruptions often occur as repeated bursts. To a distant observer, the light appears to brighten and fade rhythmically, creating the impression of an object changing power or moving. - Cloud illumination: Ash and steam can scatter volcanic light into unusual shapes, especially under low cloud cover. - Sea reflections: Around island coastlines, red volcanic light may reflect from haze, cloud layers or the ocean surface, making the source appear displaced. - Hidden geography: A volcano located behind ridges or on another island can produce a visible glow while the crater itself remains out of sight. [vmgd.gov.vu]vmgd.gov.vursday monthly and/or whenever there…Read more…
- Night-time depth errors: Over open water, observers often struggle to estimate distance. A volcanic glow tens of kilometres away can seem much closer and more local than it really is. These mechanisms are particularly important in UFO assessment because they can create the appearance of structured behaviour without requiring any aircraft or unknown object.
Tanna: the country’s most obvious UFO-light trap
The clearest example is Mount Yasur on Tanna.
Yasur is among the world’s most continuously active volcanoes. The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department describes it as a volcano characterised by ongoing Strombolian and Vulcanian activity, while historical records trace persistent eruptive behaviour back to at least the eighteenth century. - Sudden bright flashes from eruptive bursts.
- Illuminated ash and steam.

- Audible explosions that may arrive after the visible flash because of distance. [Smithsonian Volcanism Program]volcano.si.eduSmithsonian Volcanism ProgramYasurThe Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department (VMGD) reported that activity at Yasur continued at a…
For someone unfamiliar with volcanic behaviour, the sequence can sound remarkably similar to a classic UFO narrative: a bright object appears stationary, suddenly intensifies, emits flashes, changes apparent shape and then fades back into darkness.
Travel accounts frequently describe seeing Yasur’s glow from considerable distances, and the volcano is famous enough that Captain Cook reportedly noticed its illumination from offshore during the eighteenth century. [Christoph Today]christoph.todayvanuatu volcanoIt is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The glow of the volcano's lava is supposedly…Read more…
The important analytical point is that a report of a red, flashing or hovering light near Tanna starts with a strong conventional explanation already available. Any unexplained-sighting claim from the region must first eliminate Yasur’s activity using eruption records, weather conditions and viewing geometry.
Ambrym and the lava-lake illusion
Ambrym provides an even more striking example because it has historically hosted lava lakes.
The volcano’s Benbow and Marum vents became famous for molten lava lakes visible from the air and detectable from space. NASA imagery recorded brightly glowing volcanic centres, while volcanic monitoring reports repeatedly noted visible night glows even when observers could not directly see the lava itself. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience Ambrym's Lava LakesNASA ScienceAmbrym's Lava LakesDecember 19, 2012 — The Earth Observing-1 satellite captured this view of twin lava lakes in Vanuatu. One…
The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program documented periods when no exposed lava lake was visible from the crater rim, yet a strong glow remained visible above the volcano at night. [Smithsonian Volcanism Program]volcano.si.eduSmithsonian Volcanism ProgramYasurThe Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department (VMGD) reported that activity at Yasur continued at a…
That distinction is important. Witnesses do not need a direct line of sight to molten lava. They may only see:
- A red cloud.
- An illuminated steam column.
- A bright patch behind a ridge.
- A fluctuating glow over the horizon. [Smithsonian Volcanism Program]volcano.si.eduSmithsonian Volcanism ProgramYasurThe Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department (VMGD) reported that activity at Yasur continued at a…
Historically, Ambrym has produced some of the strongest night-time volcanic illumination in Vanuatu. Reports describe orange glows, glowing crater interiors and visible sky illumination from active vents. [ambrym.com]ambrym.comExcellent visibility on 10 September enabled sighting of a 10-m-diameter, crusted lava pond. Red lava was…Read more…
From a UFO-investigation perspective, this creates a powerful misidentification environment. A witness observing only the glow, without knowledge of current volcanic conditions, may perceive an isolated luminous object rather than a geological source.
Other islands where volcanic activity changes the sky
Tanna and Ambrym are the most famous examples, but they are not the only ones.
The VMGD maintains alert systems for multiple active volcanic centres including East Epi, Lopevi, Ambae, Gaua and Vanua Lava. Several of these systems generate steam emissions, gas releases, ash activity or other visible atmospheric effects that can alter the appearance of the night sky. [vmgd.gov.vu]vmgd.gov.vuakes that were visible at night. However…Read more…
The East Epi submarine eruption demonstrated how unusual lights and visible disturbances can emerge from a source that is not even on land. Monitoring reports documented steam emissions, phreatic explosions, discoloured water and floating pumice associated with the eruption. For observers on nearby islands, such activity can produce unfamiliar visual cues:
- Horizon glows.
- Bright steam columns.
- Apparent lights over the sea.
- Reflections from cloud bases.
- Unusual colours in the atmosphere. [vmgd.gov.vu]vmgd.gov.vuMeteorology and Geohazards DepartmentMin 23°C, Max 28°C. 10 knot(s). Volcano Alerts Level Summary. View More · East Epi. 1 · Yasur, Tanna…
Because Vanuatu’s population is spread across many islands separated by open ocean, a witness may have little immediate information about volcanic conditions occurring elsewhere in the archipelago.
Why volcanoes matter more than many classic UFO explanations
In many countries, investigators first examine aircraft, satellites or astronomical objects.
Those checks remain important in Vanuatu, but volcanic activity occupies a special position because it can reproduce several characteristics often associated with UFO reports simultaneously:
Reported featurePossible volcanic sourceStationary glowing objectPersistent crater glow behind terrainFlashing lightEruptive burstsObject changing shapeIlluminated cloud and steam movementRed or orange colourMolten lava and incandescent ejectaLight appearing over the seaReflection, distant island volcano or submarine activitySudden brighteningIncreased eruption intensity or explosive pulse
Unlike many astronomical explanations, volcanoes can also generate sound, ground vibration and visible atmospheric effects at the same time. This combination makes them especially convincing to observers who are trying to interpret an unexpected sighting.
How to check a sighting against volcano alerts
A useful Vanuatu UFO assessment begins with geology before moving to exotic explanations.
Check current VMGD alerts
The VMGD publishes volcanic alert levels and monitoring updates for active systems including Yasur, Ambrym and East Epi. If a sighting occurred during elevated activity, the probability of a volcanic explanation increases substantially. Identify the witness location
An observation from Tanna, Ambrym, Epi or nearby islands should immediately trigger a volcanic review. Geography matters because a glow may originate from another island rather than from the observer’s immediate surroundings. [Encyclopedia Britannica]britannica.comEncyclopedia BritannicaVanuatu | History, People, & Location3 days ago — Vanuatu, country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, consisting o…
Compare the reported colour
Red, orange and deep yellow lights fit common volcanic illumination patterns. White lights or structured navigation-light patterns may point more strongly toward aircraft or other sources. [yasur.com]yasur.comVolcano, VanuatuOngoing Strombolian and occasional Vulcanian explosions continue from the crater vents, with gas, ash…Read more…
Look for cloud and weather conditions
Low cloud can transform a hidden eruption into a floating luminous shape. Reports made during cloudy nights deserve particular caution. [vmgd.gov.vu]vmgd.gov.vuMeteorology and Geohazards DepartmentMin 23°C, Max 28°C. 10 knot(s). Volcano Alerts Level Summary. View More · East Epi. 1 · Yasur, Tanna…
Check whether the light moved independently
Many volcanic glows appear dynamic because clouds shift or eruptive intensity changes. True independent motion across large portions of the sky requires additional explanation. Distinguishing between moving light and moving source is crucial.
What remains after the volcanic filter?
The existence of volcanic misidentifications does not automatically explain every unusual sighting in Vanuatu. Aircraft, satellites, meteors, atmospheric optics and ordinary observational errors remain possible contributors. A small number of reports may still lack enough information for a definitive explanation.
However, the country’s volcanic environment changes the burden of proof. In many parts of Vanuatu, especially around Tanna, Ambrym and other active systems, a mysterious night-time glow is not evidence of something extraordinary by default. It is evidence that volcanic activity must be ruled out first.
That makes volcano glow less a minor possibility than the central screening mechanism in Vanuatu’s UFO landscape. Before any report can be considered genuinely anomalous, investigators need to establish that the islands’ most persistent producer of strange lights was not responsible.
