Introduction
Douala became Cameroon’s first identifiable UFO discussion hub through a series of modest gatherings rather than a dramatic sighting or state investigation. In 2016, local organiser Théophile “Mathéo” Mapan established a Douala branch of the francophone network “Les Repas Ufologiques”, creating the clearest documented example of a structured UFO discussion circle in the country. The meetings were small, informal, and socially fragile, but they mattered because Cameroon had almost no public infrastructure for discussing unidentified aerial phenomena outside rumour, religious interpretation, or internet forums. The importance of the Douala circle lies less in evidence for extraordinary craft than in what it reveals about how UFO culture formed in Cameroon. The archived notices, attendance reports, and later interviews show enthusiasts attempting to build a local archive of testimony and discussion in a country without official UFO files, civilian research institutes, or a long-running investigative press tradition on the subject. Douala’s meetings therefore occupy a unique place in the Cameroonian UFO timeline: they represent the moment when scattered curiosity became organised conversation. How Douala Became Cameroon’s UFO Meeting Point
Douala was the logical place for Cameroon’s first recurring UFO discussion group. It is the country’s largest city, commercial capital, and one of its strongest links to francophone media and online culture. The international “Repas Ufologiques” movement, founded in France as a network of informal dinner discussions about UFO reports and anomalous experiences, had already spread to parts of Europe and Africa before reaching Cameroon. In April 2016, the organisation publicly announced the opening of a Douala branch, naming Mathéo Mapan as local organiser. [LES REPAS UFOLOGIQUES]lesrepasufologiques.orgLES REPAS UFOLOGIQUESDouala (Cameroun) ArchivesPremière réunion des Repas Ufologiques de Douala au Cameroun. Étaient réunis le lundi 4 ju…
That announcement is historically important because there is little surviving evidence of any earlier organised UFO society in Cameroon. Stories about strange lights, spiritual visitations, and unexplained aerial events certainly existed before 2016, especially in oral traditions and local radio discussions, but those accounts rarely produced durable archives. The Douala meetings created something different: scheduled gatherings with written announcements, participant lists, and brief reports preserved online. [LES REPAS UFOLOGIQUES]lesrepasufologiques.orgLES REPAS UFOLOGIQUESDouala (Cameroun) ArchivesPremière réunion des Repas Ufologiques de Douala au Cameroun. Étaient réunis le lundi 4 ju…
The meetings also reflected a specifically francophone style of ufology. “Repas Ufologiques” events were not formal conferences built around scientific papers or military analysis. They were social meals and discussion sessions where participants exchanged stories, debated theories, and compared local experiences with international UFO narratives. That format suited Cameroon’s social environment. A rigidly academic structure would probably have failed quickly in a setting where UFO discussion was often associated either with superstition or imported conspiracy culture.
The 2016 Meetings Behind Hotel Hila
The clearest documented starting point came with the first scheduled meeting on 4 July 2016. Archived notices from the “Les Repas Ufologiques” network invited interested participants to gather behind Hotel Hila in Douala at 5pm and contact Mathéo Mapan in advance. [LES REPAS UFOLOGIQUES]lesrepasufologiques.orgLES REPAS UFOLOGIQUESDouala (Cameroun) ArchivesPremière réunion des Repas Ufologiques de Douala au Cameroun. Étaient réunis le lundi 4 ju…
The surviving records suggest a very small attendance. A later account listed participants including Matheo Mapan, Afri K Po, Ngondè Madeleine, Olivier Massock, and Moussongo Charles. The tone of the report was strikingly modest. Rather than claiming spectacular evidence, attendees presented the gathering as a first attempt to establish a Cameroonian presence inside the broader international ufology network. [LES REPAS UFOLOGIQUES]lesrepasufologiques.orgLES REPAS UFOLOGIQUESDouala (Cameroun) ArchivesPremière réunion des Repas Ufologiques de Douala au Cameroun. Étaient réunis le lundi 4 ju…
This first meeting established several patterns that continued through the year:
- The gatherings were informal rather than institutional.
- Participants relied heavily on personal testimony.
- The group blended local interpretations with international UFO culture.
- Attendance remained small and fluctuating.
- Organisers focused on continuity more than publicity.
A second documented gathering took place in August 2016. According to the meeting report, heavy rain disrupted the session, but discussion still proceeded around “strange and unexplained phenomena”. One participant reportedly described repeated encounters with unusual events that he struggled to interpret. The account gave no verifiable physical evidence, photographs, radar traces, or official documentation. Instead, the emphasis remained on witness experience and collective interpretation. By September 2016 the venue had shifted away from the original Hotel Hila location to a sports complex area after scheduling difficulties. Organisers noted the attendance of several newcomers, including a young woman interested in the subject who had not previously participated. Even in these short archived reports, the meetings appear less like investigative operations and more like attempts to keep a tiny intellectual community alive. Why Informal Meals Mattered
The structure of the Douala circle explains why it survived long enough to leave a trace at all. Cameroon had no equivalent to France’s GEIPAN, the state-backed aerospace anomaly archive, and no recognised university programme studying anomalous aerial reports. Public discussion of unexplained events often moved through churches, local spiritual frameworks, rumours about occult practices, or political distrust rather than scientific institutions.
The meal-based format lowered the social risk of participation. People could attend out of curiosity without presenting themselves as committed believers. That distinction mattered in Cameroon’s urban environment, where openly discussing UFOs could easily invite ridicule. The gatherings therefore acted as semi-private conversational spaces where unusual experiences could be discussed without immediately being classified as madness, religion, or fraud.
The meetings also reveal how African UFO culture frequently develops through social exchange rather than through large evidential cases. In North America or Europe, UFO history is often organised around famous incidents, leaked documents, or military encounters. In Douala, the social network itself became the event. The significance lay in creating continuity where previously there had been isolated anecdotes.
This is also why the archived attendance lists are valuable despite their limited scale. The names, dates, and locations provide rare fixed points in a field otherwise dominated by undocumented stories. Cameroon’s UFO history is unusually difficult to reconstruct because most accounts circulated orally or disappeared inside social media discussions that were never archived systematically.
What the Archive Preserves and Misses
The surviving record of the Douala meetings is thin but revealing. Most available documentation comes from archived posts on the “Les Repas Ufologiques” website and later references preserved through the emerging “UAP Afrique” network. [LES REPAS UFOLOGIQUES]lesrepasufologiques.orgLES REPAS UFOLOGIQUESDouala (Cameroun) ArchivesPremière réunion des Repas Ufologiques de Douala au Cameroun. Étaient réunis le lundi 4 ju…
What the archive preserves well includes:
- Dates and locations of meetings.
- The identity of organiser Théophile Mapan.
- Evidence that a recurring discussion circle genuinely existed.
- Small participant lists.
- Short summaries of discussion themes.
What it largely fails to preserve includes:
- Detailed witness testimony.
- Audio or video recordings of meetings.
- Independent corroboration of claims discussed.
- Photographs or physical evidence connected to sightings.
- Long-term membership records.
- Evidence of official interest from Cameroonian authorities.
This imbalance is important when assessing credibility. The existence of the discussion circle itself is well supported by archived announcements and reports. Claims discussed within the meetings are far less verifiable. The Douala gatherings therefore belong more to the history of UFO culture in Cameroon than to the history of confirmed unexplained aerial events.
The later emergence of “UAP Afrique” helped preserve some memory of the circle. A 2024 feature on Théophile Mapan described him as the organiser of the first Douala “Repas Ufologique” and connected his work to broader African attempts to discuss UFO phenomena outside Europe and North America. A Small Circle With Outsized Symbolic Importance
Measured by attendance or evidential output, the Douala UFO circle was tiny. Yet within Cameroon it carried disproportionate symbolic weight because it demonstrated that organised UFO discussion could exist publicly, however briefly and informally.
The meetings also exposed the tension between imported ufology and local interpretation. Participants borrowed terminology and organisational models from French-speaking international UFO culture, but the experiences discussed were filtered through Cameroonian social realities. Witnesses often approached unexplained phenomena with a mixture of spiritual, ancestral, religious, and extraterrestrial interpretations rather than separating those categories cleanly.
That hybrid character distinguishes the Douala meetings from many Western UFO groups. The circle was never purely scientific, but neither was it simply mystical. It occupied a middle ground where participants attempted to discuss anomalous experiences using whatever conceptual tools were available to them.
The lack of official archives increased the importance of these small civilian records. In countries with military declassification programmes or active aerospace research agencies, informal discussion groups remain secondary sources. In Cameroon, the opposite is often true. Grassroots conversations became some of the only surviving documentary traces of organised UFO interest.
What the Douala Circle Says About Cameroon’s UFO Landscape
The Douala meetings ultimately reveal more about information scarcity than about alien visitation. Cameroon possesses very few publicly documented UFO incidents with strong corroboration. No known national investigative body systematically collected aerial anomaly reports, and local journalism rarely treated the subject as a serious investigative field.
In that environment, even small gatherings acquired historical significance. The Douala circle functioned simultaneously as a social club, witness exchange forum, and improvised archive. It demonstrated that curiosity about unidentified aerial phenomena existed in Cameroon independently of foreign media influence, while also showing how difficult it was to sustain organised research without institutional backing.
The meetings therefore occupy a distinct place within the broader Cameroon UFO narrative. They were not a breakthrough in evidence, but they were a breakthrough in visibility. For a brief period in 2016, Douala became the clearest documented point where Cameroon’s scattered UFO curiosity turned into a recurring public conversation.
