Because the object was photographed over open water, interpretation becomes especially difficult. Distance is often impossible to establish from a single image. A relatively small nearby object can appear similar to a much larger distant one. Atmospheric distortion, haze, lens effects, and perspective compression can all complicate attempts to determine size and motion.

The offshore setting creates both strengths and weaknesses

The offshore environment gives the Cilamaya photograph a degree of credibility in popular discussion because it suggests observers accustomed to machinery, navigation, and industrial operations. At the same time, that setting removes many visual reference points. Without fixed landmarks, analysts cannot easily estimate altitude, speed, or scale.
