That makes Kathmandu an important case study within Nepal’s wider UFO history. While the better-known 1968 Himalayan incidents involved alleged physical debris and attracted intelligence interest, Kathmandu’s contemporary reports mostly illustrate how easily unidentified lights can remain unresolved without becoming persuasive evidence of an extraordinary phenomenon. One Kathmandu report from May 2008 described a bright sphere or star-like object moving horizontally for only a few seconds. Another report from November 2011 claimed that roughly a dozen bright objects appeared over western Kathmandu, rising above hills, emitting multiple colours and moving slowly northward over several minutes. Taken individually, these reports are intriguing to the witnesses involved. As evidence, however, they remain weak because almost none contain the information needed for later verification. Exact directions, weather conditions, astronomical checks, flight-path comparisons and multiple observer accounts are usually absent.
Why lights dominate Kathmandu UFO reports
Kathmandu’s UFO reports are overwhelmingly reports of light rather than reports of structured craft.
This pattern is not unique to Nepal. Studies of UFO databases consistently find that lights in the sky make up a large share of sightings worldwide. Bright points, coloured flashes and distant luminous objects are easier to notice than conventional aircraft, but they are also harder to identify accurately without instruments.
