Human observers are poor judges of distance, speed, and altitude when viewing isolated lights against a dark sky. Lens Flare and Internal Reflections
Lens flare occurs when strong light sources reflect inside a camera lens assembly. The resulting artefacts may appear as glowing discs, spheres, or geometric shapes.
Important clues include:
- Objects aligned with the Sun or another bright light source.
- Repeated circular patterns.
- Shapes that move when the camera angle changes.
- Apparent objects that are absent to the naked eye.
These artefacts frequently resemble popular UFO imagery despite being generated entirely inside the camera.
Digital Zoom and Pixel Interpretation
Many alleged UFO photographs are heavily zoomed images of distant lights. Once digital zoom enlarges a small light source, the camera sensor and processing software begin creating patterns that look like structure.
A distant aircraft light, bright planet, or meteor can become a shape that appears metallic, triangular, or disc-like after enlargement. The resulting image often reveals more about the camera sensor than the object itself.
Exposure and Motion Effects
Night photography requires longer exposure times or aggressive image processing.
This can create:
- Light trails.
- Multiple-image ghosting.
